In Hérault, a football club in the town of Sète was sanctioned for community practices. He had his approval withdrawn from the French football federation.

A football club from Sète (Hérault) presents a logo with religious signs. It was displayed for several years. The prefect asked to withdraw the approval of the association. Some residents seem shocked. “You don’t have to expose your religious beliefs on a football jersey”, estimates a passerby. An inspection was carried out last June and identified shortcomings. Jean-Xavier Lauch, prefect of Hérault, details: “On returning, the state services found prayer rugs. (…) I don’t believe that sports clubs are there to do anything other than sport.”

A change of logo

A few days after the inspection, the club changed its logo. It no longer presents any religious sign. For one of the club’s coaches, the prefect’s decision is incomprehensible. He refutes all communitarianism and all proselytism. According to the club’s lawyer, anyone can play there, regardless of religion or gender. The club challenged the prefect’s order in court. A hearing will take place on May 16.
