The authorization of the class action brought against the popular video game Fortnite is maintained. Magistrate Guy Cournoyer rendered a decision on Friday stipulating that the company Epic Games, owner of the game, could not appeal this authorization before the Court of Quebec.
The class action request, which was authorized on December 7 by the Superior Court, denounces the dependence that this game creates on its young followers. Three parents undertook the process in 2019, under the responsibility of the law firm Calex.
This is not Epic Games’ first run-in with the law.
At the end of 2022, Epic Games reached an agreement with the United States Consumer Protection Agency, agreeing to pay it $520 million. The Agency accused the company of not having sufficiently protected underage players from Fortnite.
Since then, Epic Games has notably added an additional level of validation for a purchase and introduced a spending limit on the platform for players under the age of 13.
