Orpea: a name change that raises questions

Orpea becomes Emeis, a change of name and logo for, perhaps, a change of method, after a major abuse scandal in the group’s nursing homes.

Orpea becomes Emeis, a change of name and logo for, perhaps, a change of method, after a major abuse scandal in the group’s nursing homes.

A new identity to improve the image of Orpea. A new name and a new logo revealed by the group’s general manager on X: “Today, we become Emeis group. This change is much more than a change of name. Emeis is a collective and demanding project. It allows us to respond to societal issues: mental and physical health, and old age”, indicated Laurent Guillot. Shortcomings in staff management, overloaded structures, and cases of mistreatment of certain residents… abuses had been denounced in January 2022 in the book “Les fosdiggers”, by journalist Victor Castanet.

A group saved from bankruptcy by Caisse des Dépôts

Following its publication, dozens of families testified, like Isabelle Schwartz, daughter of a resident of an Orpea nursing home. “She was in a state close to death, since she was multiple fractures”, specifies Isabelle Schwartz. Since then, Orpea has been the subject of legal proceedings. Heavily in debt, the group, which employs 28,000 employees in France, was saved from bankruptcy by Caisse des Dépôts. A consortium took control of it in December 2023.
