A caribou protection strategy within “a few weeks”, assures Charette

After having been postponed numerous times, the woodland caribou protection strategy should be presented in the “next days” or “next weeks,” assures the Minister of the Environment, Benoit Charette.

“We want to do things well. Stakeholders are involved, including municipalities, regions and the industries concerned. Indigenous communities too. So we take the time to do things well,” he said in a press scrum on Thursday.

Mr. Charette did not want to give a specific date. “But we will be able to present it at the right time in the coming days and weeks,” he said.

The presentation of the forest caribou habitat protection strategy has been postponed several times since 2019. At the time, the file was in the hands of the member for Abitibi-Est, Pierre Dufour, then Minister of Forests, of Wildlife and Parks.

Benoit Charette was supposed to deliver a strategy in 2023, but he had to postpone this deadline.

The caribou population has been declining in Quebec for several years.
