The tragedy unfolded on a large and busy shopping street in Berlin, Tauentzienstrasse. Around 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 8, ucar hit passers-by, firefighters told AFP and the German press (in German). The toll is heavy: a teacher was killed and the emergency services counted “more than a dozen injured” six of which are “between life and death” and three others are “seriously injured”.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested, police said, without specifying whether it was an intentional act or a loss of control of the vehicle. “We have no tangible proof of a political act so far”said Berlin police chief Barbara Slowik at the end of the day.

The vehicle came to be embedded in the window of a pharmacy, specifies the information site RBB (in German). The crowd was great at this time of day in this commercial and tourist district located near the zoological garden, west of the capital.

Among the injured are teenagers from the Land of Hesse (west) who were on a school trip to Berlin, according to the authorities of this region. In addition to the deceased teacher, another of their teachers was seriously injured.
