a canteen in Eure sells meals on the Too good to go app

Over a ton of food wasted last school year, 1040 kilos to be exact, the SIVOS GTT, the inter-municipal union for schools which manages the catering, has done the accounts and its president, Sébastien Bonneau has sought solutions to recycle this waste. It is a bit by chance that he hears about the Too good to go application which sells unsold products of the day, from restaurants, shops, bakeries, nursing homes or canteens.

Since January 24, the canteen, in which a hundred children have lunch every day, has been testing the sale of excess meals on the application: “we decided on a price of three euros fifty” details the chosen one, very happy to throw less.

We don’t do this to make money, that’s not the goal. It’s really to enhance rather than throw away – Sébastien Bonneau

Thirty baskets sold in one month

Every day, at least one basket is prepared for the application and the number can go up to six. Once the lunch service is over, “the canteen agents prepare the baskets, package them in trays, with a label for the origin of the meat and we inform above all that they must be consumed the same day” explains Sébastien Bonneau.

“Today we made six baskets” reports Véronique Sanson. These baskets reduce daily waste, “today, we were three kilos” says the head of the canteen for twenty-one years, “it’s much better than throwing away all the trash”.

The baskets are then to be collected at the daycare between 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Among the customers of the day, Lauriane with her two sons Jules and Noah: “We are also careful at home with regard to waste and waste” explains the mother who came on purpose from Gravigny, 17 kilometers from Tournedos-Bois-Hubert to pick up her basket. Noah, five years old, would like to discover “cordons bleus” and his nine-year-old brother “lasagna”.

Too good to go reverse around one euro per basket to the syndicatet, who must then deduct the purchase of the trays and the annual subscription of forty euros to the platform and “The money goes back to the school budget, in extra-curricular or extracurricular activities. It can help finance games, toys or an outing” specifies Sébastien Bonneau, who, if the test proves conclusive, certainly thinks of continuing the adventure with too good to go.
