The presidential election began in Senegal on Sunday March 24, after a month of delay.
This was still unexpected a few weeks ago. Senegal votes for the presidential election this Sunday, March 24, calmly. After finally a month of delay and a serious political crisis, the holding of this election is a relief for voters. However, it was far from won. Six weeks ago, the country experienced a wave of violent riots, which left four people dead. It was an announcement from the president, Macky Sall, which set the country ablaze: the latter announced that he wanted to postpone the election, without giving new dates.
The disowned president
Officially, the president said he wanted to ease political tensions. But the opposition accused him of confiscating power after serving two terms, the maximum. Finally, after weeks of tension, the Constitutional Council disavowed the president. It was therefore necessary to organize elections urgently.
