The Israeli army is creating a one-kilometer “buffer zone” around the Gaza Strip, but also a corridor within the territory that cuts the area in two. Around this road, the majority of homes were destroyed.
It is all along the border with Gaza that the Israeli army establishes its “buffer”. An area of one kilometer inside Palestinian territory, in which 90% of homes and structures have been destroyed, all buildings are on the ground. According to a study, 3,000 homes were destroyed.
No official confirmation
For Israelis, it is a question of security. “Most of these houses and buildings were used by snipers or to fire rockets into Israel, so to eliminate these threats we need to establish a security perimeter.”, estimates Michael Milshtein, military expert from the Moshe Dayan Center. The IDF also traced a route to cut off the north from the south of Gaza. An area around which all buildings have been destroyed. For Israeli activists, these are war crimes. The Israeli military does not officially confirm the existence of these zones.
