In Italy, an influencer followed by nearly 30 million people sponsored the sale of pandoro, a Christmas brioche, promising to donate the profits to a hospital. Profits which reached a million euros, and which she finally pocketed.

In a video, influencer Chiara Ferragni tries to make her 30 million Instagram subscribers salivate with her revisited version of the pandoro, candy pink color. This pastry with his signature, in limited edition, is sold for 9 euros, almost three times more than the usual price. But for charity, she assures, and the profits will be donated to a children’s hospital. It was over a year ago. The hospital has still not received the money.

Ordered to pay one million euros

Chiara Ferragni has just been fined one million euros by the Italian courts for unfair commercial practices. In Italy, the affair caused a scandal. “Pandoro is a tradition born centuries ago. For me, it’s serious to make a profit on things like that“, comments Jacopo Cionfi, pastry chef. After her conviction, the blogger saw her partnerships collapse. She has just published an apology video on social networks, looking defeated. She pleads the mistake. “We could be wrong. I regret having done it, I could have been more careful” she said.
