A siren sounded in the courtyard of the Germaine-Tillion high school, in Castelnaudary (Aude), Tuesday March 26. A man called the police station to report the presence of a bomb, triggering the intervention of 50 heavily armed gendarmes to secure the area. When they arrived, the police asked the 1,500 high school students and their teachers to confine themselves to their classes.
“There was a lot of stress, a lot of people panicking”
Some students remained barricaded under their desks for three hours. The alert was finally lifted in the early evening, since there was no bomb or intrusion into the establishment. The high school students were reunited with their parents after a trying afternoon. “It was horrible. There was a lot of stress, a lot of people panicking“, reported an upset student. Classes resumed normally on Wednesday.
