A body was discovered on Friday December 10 off Calais (Pas-de-Calais), according to the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea. The Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation, entrusted to the maritime gendarmerie.
“This body has obviously been in the water for a very long time”, declared the deputy prosecutor of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Philippe Sabatier, specifying that he was not “Not possible” at this point to say whether it was a migrant or not. “An examination of the body must be carried out by a forensic doctor, in order to know whether the facts are criminal or not, and to try to determine the possible causes”. “DNA samples will also be taken” in order to identify the victim, whose “we don’t know anything”, he added.
This discovery comes just over two weeks after a shipwreck that claimed the lives of 27 people on their way to the English coast aboard a makeshift boat.
