Fifteen people were killed and another is missing after a boat accident in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital, emergency services said on Sunday July 10.
The tragedy happened on Friday evening, when the passenger ship was caught in the tide and capsized. “There were 16 passengers on board at the time of the accident”, said a National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) official. According to him, four bodies were found on Saturday, and rescuers recovered eleven other bodies on Sunday. The sixteenth passenger had not been found Sunday afternoon.
According to the first elements communicated by the authorities, the passengers were not wearing life jackets and the boat would have “broken the rules […] regarding late travel by setting sail at 7:45 p.m.”.
Boat accidents – often overloaded and poorly maintained – are common on Nigerian waterways, especially during the rainy season. On Wednesday, two people were killed and 15 others rescued when their boat capsized in Ikorodu, outside Lagos.
