Washington calls for restraint. A blockade of Taiwan by China would put Beijing at risk of “huge risk of escalation and would probably be doomed to failure”estimated senior American officials on Tuesday September 19, while Beijing has increased military maneuvers in recent days, simulating an encirclement of the island.

Such a blockade “would have a devastating effect on the international community”who could react, “what Beijing would prefer to avoid”, warned Ely Ratner, Deputy Secretary of Defense. Major General Joseph McGee, however, ruled that the blockade “is an option, but it is not a very likely military option”. “It is much easier to talk about a blockade than to implement it”he added.

Beijing considers Taiwan as one of its provinces, which it wishes to one day reunify with the rest of its territory, by force if necessary. Washington, Taipei’s ally, has so far spoken of 2027 as a possible date for a Chinese invasion.
