a big start in Florence, a final time trial in Nice… Discover the route of the 111th edition

The route of the 111th edition of the Tour de France (from June 29 to July 21, 2024), which will start from Florence to reach Nice, was revealed on Wednesday.

A route concentrated on two thirds of France. The organizers unveiled, Wednesday October 25, the route of the 2024 edition of the Tour de France, which will be quite unique. On the one hand, the 111th edition will leave Italy on June 29, a first in the history of the Grande Boucle. On the other hand, if every year the Tour de France has made its final arrival on the Champs-Elysées since 1975, this year the riders will finish this Tour in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes).

Indeed, the Grande Boucle ends on July 21, five days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (July 26), with the opening ceremony on the Seine, hosting the two events in the same place is not possible. was not possible from an organizational point of view.

Three days in Italy for a unique Grand Departure

This is a first. Never before has the Grand Start of the Grande Boucle been given from Italy. This will now be done in the next edition, 100 years after the first victory of an Italian rider, Ottavio Bottecchia. The Grand Start will be given in Florence. The first stage will connect Florence and Rimini on June 29, on the shores of the Adriatic in Emilia-Romagna, before passing through Bologna on the second day, then crossing the country towards Piedmont and Turin.

After three days in the country of the Boot, the runners will set off one last time from an Italian town, Pinerolo on July 2, and will arrive on the French side in Valloire (Savoie). Just before crossing the finish line in France, the runners will pass through the Col du Galibier (2642 meters above sea level, 23 km at 5.1%).

ASO organizers are delighted with this program “between Italian towns and countryside”, “at the same time as it offers an atypical sporting challenge to launch hostilities”. “Leaving the sublime Florence to cross Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna and aim for the finish on the beach in Rimini, the peloton will be faced from the outset with a day of 3,700 meters of positive elevation opening opportunities for all the daring”, they explained again at the end of December during the unveiling of the Grand Départ. The last stage in Italy will be for the sprinters, Turin “having become a mecca for sprinting during the numerous stages which were judged there during the Tour of Italy”.

A hearty menu before the Pyrenees

The Tour de France will cover the roads of Burgundy over three days. The runners will arrive in the region via Mâcon on Thursday July 4, a stage which will reach Dijon. It’s been seven years since the Tour de France last took place in Côte-d’Or. For Dijon, the last appearance on the Tour map dates back to 1997. The 7th stage will be a time trial, one of two on the route, between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of the Route des Grands Crus.

The Tour will finally start the 8th stage in Semur-en-Auxois on Saturday July 6 to reach Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, in Haute-Marne (Grand Est region). From there, the peloton will have almost reached the northernmost point of this edition’s route. After passing through Troyes, in the form of a loop for the 9th stage, the riders will head south-west via Orléans (Loiret) which is returning to the route after 22 years of absence, Saint-Amand-Montrond (Cher ), one of the historic provinces of Berry and Bourbonnais and birthplace of Julian Alaphilippe. Another massif will then stand on the runners’ route with an arrival at the Lioran ski resort, in Cantal, located at an altitude of 1,250 meters, before Aurillac in the Massif central.

Failing to pass through the Northern Alps, the mountain stages will therefore take place for a large part in the Pyrenees. After a visit to Pau from July 12 to 13, host city for the 10th time in ten years, the Tour will pass through the Col du Tourmalet to arrive at Saint-Lary-Soulan, more precisely at Pla d’Adet (1669 m, 10 .6 km at 7.9%) where Tadej Pogacar won in 2021. The riders will continue with a 15th stage linking Loudenvielle, still in the Hautes-Pyrénées, and the Beille plateau in Ariège (1780 m, 15.8 km at 7.9%).

A time trial in Nice to finish

After a passage in the southwest, the course route heads south-east where the runners will crisscross the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region over the last five days. They will arrive via the SuperDévoluy station, the finish town of the 17th stage, located at an altitude of 2,500 meters and which will thus give climbers a complex playground at the end of the Tour. After an 18th stage between Gap and Barcelonnette, the riders will also tackle the Hautes-Alpes between Embrun and Isola 2000, on a mountainous course in the southern Alps.

To conclude this 111th edition, the organizers chose a finale in Nice, with the 20th stage between Nice and the Col de la Couillole (1,678 m above sea level) and the final connection between Monaco and Nice, with a counter-race. -watch to conclude this edition.
