As she embarks on an obstacle course to treat her dementia-stricken father, a young woman raising her daughter alone reconnects with a long-lost friend.
As in Everything went well (François Ozon) and in you will remember me (Éric Tessier), to cite just these recent titles, the story ofA nice morning puts at its center a brilliant man with a degenerative disease. Inspired by an episode that actually happened in her life, Mia Hansen-Løve (The future, Bergman’s Island) takes a different approach, however.
The filmmaker evokes in her new film a particular chapter in the life of Sandra (Léa Seydoux). As sometimes happens, fate places a great trial (the end of life of a loved one) on the young woman’s path at the same time, as well as great joy (a new love). While she is caught in all the administrative maze in order to find a place where her father, a former philosophy teacher with a passion for literature, could be cared for, this modest freelance translator, who is raising her daughter alone, indeed meets by chance a old friend, Clément (Melvil Poupaud), for whom she will quickly develop beautiful feelings.
This way of intermingling the great emotions of existence is the price ofA nice morning. With subtlety and finesse, but also a lot of simplicity, Mia Hansen-Løve evokes the state of mind of a woman who, faced with grieving, has at the same time the opportunity to be brought back to her life as a woman, even if the situation is not simple. Having become madly in love with Clément, Sandra must indeed come to terms with the marital reality of this married man.
Stripped of all artifice, delivered naturally, Léa Seydoux offers here one of her most beautiful compositions. We will also remember the beautiful presence of the actors interpreting the two most important men in the eyes of Sandra. Pascal Greggory is particularly moving in the role of a man animated by a deep melancholy in his moments of lucidity, and Melvil Poupaud brings the luminous part of a story where the great contradictions of life are answered.
