A sequel was in the works in 2018, Black Panther having raised $1.344 billion worldwide. But in 2020 the death of Chadwick Boseman, interpreter of title role, turned the director’s plans upside down. Today in Wakanda Forever, the vanished hero, women take the reins. Release: Wednesday, November 9.
Following the death of King T’Challa/Black Panther, Queen Ramonda watches over the protection of Wakanda with her close guard. All the countries of the world are eyeing vibranium, raw material and source of infinite energy, only present on their territory, and that there is no question of negotiating. At the bottom of the seas, the kingdom of Talokan also has this resource. When discovered by a mining consortium, this unknown civilization threatens to attack mankind.
War and energy shortages, subjects at the heart of Wakanda Forever, stick to the concerns of today’s world (Ukraine, gas crisis). This synchronicity gives salt to this sequel which remains faithful to the franchise. Ryan Coogler’s production has breath and keeps the spectators in suspense during the 2h42 of the film. But a schematic scenario and the absence of the superhero, to which Chadwick Boseman brought all his charisma, slow down the whole thing a little.
With Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyongo’o), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and elite warriors Dora Milaje, Wakanda Forever looks like wonder woman, the heroine of DC Comics, the rival of Marvel. The Amazons have a lot to do, facing tough negotiations with world powers who also want to benefit from vibranium. In the shadows, the Talokans, amphibious creatures of the most virile and aggressive, offer them an alliance, which gives a little body to the script.
The fantasy universe is always sumptuous, especially in the costumes, already major assets of the previous film. The show is there and the action is constant in the rules of the art. But maybe a bit expected.
