A previously unreleased Beatles song recorded using artificial intelligence to recreate the voice of John Lennon, who was murdered in 1980, will be released this year, announced Paul McCartney, who is about to turn 81 on June 18.

“The Last Beatles Recording”

In an interview broadcast on Tuesday June 13 by the BBC on the occasion of the exhibition of photos of the early days of the Beatles which opens on June 28 at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the musician of the legendary band from Liverpool explained that the voice by Lennon had been taken from an old cassette and separated from the musical accompaniment to make this new song.

We managed to take John’s voice and purify it using the AI to mix the recording“, he continued. “We came to do what will be the last Beatles recording, it was a demo of John that we worked from“, explained Paul McCartney. “We just finished and it will come out this year”he added.

Precedents

It is not the first time that thanks to artificial intelligence we recreate, rejuvenate voices or bring together the old Beatles virtually, thus always moving fans. So there was a new version of New, a Paul McCartney single released in 2013, on which a fan rejuvenated the Beatles’ voice and added a part sung by his former partner John Lennon. Equally impressive: a version of Grow Old With Me, one of the last songs written by John Lennon, released after his assassination in 1980 and recreated by an artificial intelligence enthusiast calling himself Dae Lims. VSTechnological prowess obviously raises ethical and legal questions. The novelty this time is that the announcement of a new Beatles song thanks to artificial intelligence, was made by Paul McCartney himself.

In April 1970, six months after the release of the album Abbey Road and one month before that of let it be, the Beatles have announced their separation. Their ten years together have produced 14 best-selling albums, nearly a billion records sold and the shooting of several films.
