In a town in Japan, tourists flocked to a convenience store to take pictures of themselves in front of Mount Fuji. The municipality installed a net to hide the view.

In Japan, Mount Fuji is a natural splendor and a sacred mountain for the most religious. He is the star of postcards, but also of social networks. The photo in front of a modern convenience store has gone viral. Annoyed by the photographic pilgrimage and the overtourism that accompanies it, the municipality of Fujikawaguchiko (Japan) decided to erect an opaque mesh net 20 m long and 2.5 m high. “It’s disappointing that they are installing this net in front of this emblematic spot, but we can understand” assures Christina Roys, tourist from New Zealand.

In this country attached to strict compliance with the rules, the incivility of tourists had become intolerable, such as dangerous behavior along the road or abandoned waste… “There are so many people sometimes that I have trouble getting out of my car”, says Yoshihiko Ogawa, grocer. Local authorities want to leave the barrier in place as long as necessary.
