Audrey Chanonat, national secretary in charge of the education and pedagogy commission of the National Union of Directors of National Education (SNPDEN), denounced “a bandage on a wooden leg”, the government’s avenues for recruiting teachers in the perspective of the “Shock of Knowledge” reform. Even if the expression of level groups no longer appears in official texts, the philosophy of the reform still arouses opposition. Teachers are on strike again Tuesday April 2.

In a letter recently addressed to rectors, the HR Director of the Minister of Education calls for finding “innovative solutions” to recruit teachers: retired teachers, private sector teachers, better paid contract workers. “We have undoubtedly gone much too quickly in this reform. We have been saying it for several months, this reform has been forced. It is being carried out by forcing. And the way in which the ministry has imposed it in establishments means that no anticipation could not be carried out for the recruitment of human resources”lamented Audrey Chanonat. “We owe the students of the Republic the necessary means to help them progress. That’s not how we’re going to get there”she added.

“Putting resources on the table”

Audrey Chanonat is not very attracted to the idea of calling on retired teachers: “With all due respect, is this a relevant solution that will help students succeed? Obviously not”, she says. According to her, the government has no other means than to “put resources on the table”. Only way to succeed: “We can always try to find the most imaginative and innovative solutions possible, which are not solutions, but that will not make the students succeed“, she assures. “The key to the success or failure of this reform will be the means that the ministry can put on the table at the start of the 2024 school year and even more so at the start of the 2025 school year”, she insists. Otherwise, “it’s a predicted failure”she says.
