The death of a young woman sparks outrage in Martinique. A 22-year-old man was indicted for the murder of his girlfriend and placed in pre-trial detention in Fort-de-France, the prosecution announced on Friday February 16.

The young man confessed to being the author of the shot which fatally hit the 22-year-old victim in the face during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. He however, asserts “that it’s an accident, that it’s completely unintentional”specified Clarisse Taron, public prosecutor of Fort-de-France.

This version did not convince the investigating judge in charge of the case, who considered “that there were serious and consistent clues, to the extent that he shot in front of the victim who died”. Justice is relying on the testimony of a friend of the victim who was present in the apartment and called for help.

“A Valentine of Horror”

The man went himself to the Fort-de-France police station late Wednesday afternoon, on the advice of his mother. Known to the police and the courts, he was sentenced in 2023 to eight months in prison for carrying a category C weapon. This is the third murder committed in Martinique since the start of the year, on first feminicide.

The Martinique Women’s Union denounced on Wednesday “a Valentine of horror”. “She was murdered because she is a woman”protested for its part Culture Equality, another Martinican feminist association.
