A 2% indexation of metropolitan public transit, despite galloping inflation

Despite galloping inflation, public transit fares in the greater Montreal area will increase by an average of 2% from July 1, the Regional Metropolitan Transport Authority (ARTM) confirmed Thursday morning.

The unit price will also remain at $3.50 in the greater Montreal area this year, the Authority announced in an online press conference that began at 10 a.m. in the presence of its director general, Benoît Gendron. A decision taken to give respite to users of public transport, who have shunned it in large numbers in recent years, in the context of a pandemic.

At the same time, the ARTM is continuing its fare overhaul, which aims to simplify travel throughout the metropolitan region. Thus, 332 more limited tickets are withdrawn, while 29 larger ones are created. For example, it will be possible to obtain an “all modes” pass, including the commuter train, metro and buses, in order to circulate in the Montreal agglomeration for 94 dollars per month. The Metropolitan Express Network (REM) will eventually be added to this transit pass.

“Fares are an important means of ensuring greater use of public transit,” argued Mr. Gendron. It will thus be possible for users to travel over a larger territory than before with the same ticket.

More details will follow.
