A 2.22 kg oyster found in Finistère at Carantec

In mid-December 2021, Gireg Berder harvested an oyster weighing 2.22 kg in his oyster farm. A usual phenomenon, according to him. It remains to find hammer and chisel to open it!

A 2.22 kg oyster found in Finistère at Carantec in mid-December. A record? Not so sure.

Gireg Berder, owner of the oyster farm where the mollusk was collected, relates. “We raise oysters on the ground (Editor’s note: not in pockets). This oyster was found in a corner of the park where we had sown in 2006. We had not reworked this place for years.”

The oyster therefore buried itself in the sand and lived there a peaceful life for 15 years. Giving it time for growth out of sight and especially appetites. A pickup in mid-December broke his peace of mind. She had then reached a good size: 27 cm long, 13 cm wide.

When I cleared the park this year I found five or six like this.

But it takes more to impress Gireg Berder, 4th generation of oyster farmers at the head of the “Oysters of Penn al lann” in the bay of Morlaix: “My father, my grandfather found such big ones. It doesn’t happen every year, but it is regular. When I cleaned the park this year I found five or six like that . “

In October 2020, social networks already reported an oyster weighing 2.2 kg also found in Carantec.

It remains to be seen how to open an oyster weighing more than 2 kg. On this point, Gireg Berder is formal: “with a hammer and a chisel”. Heating it in the oven is also a solution. Perhaps less perilous.
