A 17-year-old Quebecer drowns during a swimming camp in Florida

A Quebec teenager died in the United States while swimming in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, in west Florida.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, near Tampa, said William Zhang, 17, was visiting Florida with his swim team to take part in a camp.

Police were called Wednesday morning after William Zhang failed to return to shore with the other members of his swim team after practice. His lifeless body was found in the afternoon.

Swimming coaches assured police that they checked for currents and hazards before the swimmers entered the water.

The sheriff’s office says the teen’s death does not appear suspicious, but the investigation is continuing.
