A 10-year-old girl was violently attacked in the middle of the street on Monday in Montreal, in the Pointe-aux-Trembles sector.
The child was returning home around 11:30 a.m. for lunch with a friend when a man accosted her, threw her to the ground and hit her repeatedly in the head, inflicting “serious injuries”, said the porter. word of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), Raphaël Bergeron.
The girl’s life is not in danger but we can “assume that she suffered a nervous shock”, he added.
She was taken to a hospital.
A woman who claims to be his aunt has posted photos of the child in hospital online on social media showing his bruised and bloodied face.
A 21-year-old man, who is not known to police, was arrested at the scene of the attack and questioned by investigators.
The motive for the assault remains to be determined, but investigators believe the suspect suffered from mental health issues.
In the morning, the SPVM could not confirm when the man was to appear at the Montreal courthouse.
