The metropolis of Toulouse adopts seasonal pricing for water, the price of which will increase by 42% until October. The rest of the year, it will drop by 30% in order to save resources and fight against drought.
It’s a small gesture that will cost more for the residents of the Toulouse metropolitan area. Between June and October, the price of water will increase by 42% compared to the current rate and will decrease by 30% from November to May. The idea is to “ensure that through dual-period pricing, people change their behavior and pay attention during periods when there is little water”explains Jean-Luc Moudenc, president (DVD) of Toulouse Métropole.
For a family with a child, the bill is smoothed over the year by 60 cents, but with a swimming pool and a garden, it can exceed 83 euros. Esther Crauser-Delbourg, water economist, fears that this tool “[favorise] those who can no longer afford to pay for water” And “let the good habits acquired during the summer go away” when the price decreases. In an opinion published last November, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council recommended the generalization of this measure to all municipalities affected by the seasonal lack of drinking water.
