Garry Conille arrives in Haiti to serve as Prime Minister

(Miami) A United Nations (UN) development specialist charged with restoring order in Haiti arrived in the Caribbean country on Saturday to take up his new role as prime minister.


A transition council seeking to pave the way for elections in Haiti this week appointed Garry Conille to the post. He replaces interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert, whom he met upon his arrival Saturday in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, according to a government press release.

Mr. Conille has been UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023. He previously served as Prime Minister of Haiti from October 2011 to May 2012 during the reign of President Michel Martelly.

Gang violence continues to rise in parts of the Haitian capital and beyond as Mr. Conille takes charge of the troubled country pending the UN-backed deployment of a UN-backed police force. Kenya and other countries.
