And in the end, it is always Real Madrid who wins in the Champions League final. The Merengues beat Borussia Dortmund (2-0) on Saturday June 1 to claim a 15th C1 title. Undefeated in the final since 1998 (nine victories in a row), Carlo Ancelotti’s men suffered enormously, particularly in the first half, but once again emerged victorious. Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Dani Carvajal, one of the two scorers of the evening with Vinicius Jr, won their sixth Champions League, Jude Bellingham his first.

So history repeated itself again. And she is as ruthless as ever for her opponents. Real Madrid was once again dominated for a large part of the time, entangled for 70 minutes in the web woven by Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. The Merengues, as often, let the storm pass, enormous for around ten minutes in the first half, to finally sting at the decisive moment, thanks to Dani Carvajal. The Real grunt appeared at the near post to place his head on a corner taken by Toni Kroos (1-0, 74th).

In the process, Jude Bellingham, left alone at the penalty point, missed the dream opportunity to kill the final in three minutes (77th). A boon that Vinicius Jr did not miss a few minutes later (2-0, 83rd), to close the fate of this final and push the limits of resilience ever further. The same Vinicius Jr had, until the first goal, been the only one to float in the offensive sector to provide a few timid chances for the White House, who had only shot twice in the first period.

Borussia Dortmund will undoubtedly be terribly blamed for this. Struggling in the championship (5th), transformed into the Champions League, the BvB confirmed that it was one of the best teams of this campaign.

But he was unable to materialize his huge highlight between the 15th and 35th minute, marked by several clear chances, notably from Karim Adeyemi and Nicklas Füllkrug, whose shot found the post of a Thibaut Courtois decisive to maintain Real alive (23rd). “We made some mistakes, but they didn’t kill us. And when they don’t kill us, we come back quickly”underlined Eduardo Camavinga at the microphone of Canal+

As a symbol of their excellent match but far too ineffective against such a team, the goal of the same Füllkrug, which could have offered a fiery finale, was refused for offside (87th). Faced with a Real Madrid that is still as resistant defensively and clinical offensively, Borussia Dortmund wasted too much, like Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

For Real Madrid, this 15th title, the sixth since 2014, seems obvious despite often lackluster play in this campaign. Undefeated in the final for 26 years, the White House confirms more than ever that the C1 is its competition. “Our strength is that in this club, when everyone thinks it’s over, we increase our level of play, that’s our mentality”welcomed Federico Valverde.

Carlos Ancelotti wins his fifth coronation, the third with Real Madrid after 2014 and 2022. Aurélien Tchouameni, still the victim of a stress fracture in the metatarsal (left foot) but who announced that he would be “physically ready” for the Euro, wins his first C1. Just like Jude Bellingham, voted best player in La Liga at 20, who takes an option for the next Ballon d’Or despite a failed final on a personal level.
