Artificial intelligence was not welcome at the Montreal BD Festival, which was held last week. Organizers excluded AI-created comics from the competition and all sales booths. For what ? I explain to you !
First, what is artificial intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (or AI) refers to all the technologies or software capable of learning to reproduce human behavior. Like the ability to make decisions, write poems… or draw!
Machine versus artist
So why did the Montreal BD Festival ban AI? Among other things, because comic creators feel threatened by these new technologies. Illustrators and authors fear they will no longer have work if software (which costs less than an artist and can work extremely quickly) can replace their creativity and talent!
And artists have another big problem with AI. Plagiarism.
AI = plagiarism?
To create text or images, the AI must be trained. How ? By feeding on thousands and thousands of texts and images that already exist. This “food” is the works of creators. But the AI didn’t ask them for permission to take inspiration from their work!
What are copyrights?
It is a right that protects the works of illustrators, writers, musicians and other creators. It ensures that no one can copy, sell or use their creations without their permission.
A hero is reborn thanks to AI
However, some cartoonists like to use AI. According to them, it’s a tool like any other that can make certain tasks easier and even give them a little inspiration. In Japan, a very famous manga, Blackjack, had a sequel in 2023, 30 years after the death of its author. And it was, you guessed it, thanks to… AI.
