Roland-Garros | Félix Auger-Aliassime easily wins against Ben Shelton

(Paris) Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime completed a 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 victory on Saturday over Ben Shelton in the third round of Roland-Garros.


Auger-Aliassime, 21e seeded, won in one hour and 52 minutes against the American, 15e Headlining.

The match was stopped by rain with the Quebecer leading 5-4 in the first set on Friday.

Shelton committed six double faults and made twice as many unforced errors as his rival (36-18).

Auger-Aliassime collected the six breaks of the match, in addition to having the upper hand 28-17 for the winning shots.

His next opponent will be Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, seeded number 3.

Alcaraz is the reigning Wimbledon champion.

The Canadian won their first three confrontations, before losing the other two. Alcaraz notably beat him at Indian Wells this year.

The rain also interrupted Ontario’s Denis Shapovalov’s match on Friday.

He trails 6-3, 7-6 (0) and 2-1 in front of Hubert Hurkacz, seeded number 8.

The match is scheduled to resume on Saturday.

Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu faces off against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, 12e first in the series.

Friday, Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez lost 6-4, 7-6 (5) to Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the third round.

Eighth seed, Jabeur won in just under two hours against Fernandez, 21e first in the series.
