Quebec | In the jewel case

Lovers of sophisticated cocktails and unusual spaces, there is something new in Quebec that should charm you: Le Bijou, a cocktail bar opened since last summer in the heart of Old Quebec inside de Monsieur Jean, a private mansion with around forty rooms.

First a café, the space, which is not located on the street and which is accessed through the hotel lobby, has been completely refreshed. Magnificent and elegant, the place is adorned with vibrant colors and reveals itself as a hidden gem of style speakeasy when you enter it.

“With Monsieur Jean, we wanted to offer a place like no other, with a touch of fantasy and madness in the decor. We have an obsession with small details and Bijou wants to be in this continuity. We also wanted to meet a need of our customers and offer a place to have a drink before or after dinner,” explains co-owner Benjamin Campeau, whose parents, Jean Campeau, interior designer, and Geneviève Marcon (GM Développement) , acquired this building where Quebec City offices were once located and are the creators of its unique decor and design, in collaboration with Agence Spatiale.

The cocktails and small plates are just as visually polished as the decor. In addition to the classics, there are original creations that will impress the gallery: Cœur flaming, a lush blend of mezcal, spruce liqueur and spicy chili syrup or the feminine Bijou de famille, a fine blend of Gin Ubald Vallée floral, St-Germain, elderberry liqueur and grapefruit juice. Unless you prefer the smoky Forbidden Fruit, where calvados, rye whiskey and maple sugar smoked with cedar plank and apple wood intermingle, or the tropical Passion royale, highlighting the fruit of passion.

To nourish ourselves, we enjoyed diving into the delicious hot olives with orange, rosemary and garlic, and biting into the bites of red tuna on crispy rice. Avocado tarts, oysters, burrata and beef carpaccio are among the other offerings, all in all classic, but generally well executed.
