Two days of tribute to Jean-Pierre Ferland

The national funeral of Jean-Pierre Ferland, who died on April 27 at the age of 89, will take place on Saturday in Montreal. The public will also be able to pay tribute to him during a funeral chapel on Friday. Here is how these two days will unfold.


Burning Chapel

The public will be able to offer their condolences to the family of Jean-Pierre Ferland during a funeral service which will take place on Friday, May 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Foyer Jean-Gascon at the Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts.

A register of condolences will be made available to the public during the funeral service. It is also possible to sign it online until June 2 at 11:59 p.m.

National funeral

Held by the government of Quebec, the national funeral will take place at the Marie-Reine-du-Monde cathedral basilica in Montreal on Saturday 1er June from 11 a.m. Many dignitaries and artists are expected at the ceremony, which will be punctuated by testimonies and several musical performances.

Places are reserved for the public inside the cathedral, but there are very few of them. Doors open at 9 a.m. Saturday, and people who wish to attend the ceremony must present themselves at the checkpoint located on Place du Canada, at the intersection of René-Lévesque and the Cathedral.

There will be a projection of the ceremony outside the cathedral, on a giant screen located on Place du Canada. The site will only be accessible from Rue Peel and De La Gauchetière. The public who attend is invited to wear a touch of yellow, to recall the legendary album of the singer-songwriter.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on major television networks.

Traffic

The quadrilateral around the Marie-Reine-du-Monde cathedral basilica will be closed to traffic between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.:

  • René-Lévesque between Robert-Bourassa and Peel;
  • From the Cathedral between René-Lévesque and De La Gauchetière;
  • Mansfield between René-Lévesque and De La Gauchetière;
  • Metcalfe between rue du Square-Dorchester and René-Lévesque.
