CF Montreal 4 – DC United 2 | The three points, finally

The magnolias had time to bloom, then their flowers to fall, between CF Montreal’s two victories. But finally, after a month and a half of drought, he finally picked up the three points.

The CFM won 4-2, Wednesday evening, at Saputo stadium, against DC United who defended 10 against 11 throughout the second half. A good 46 days after his last victory, in all competitions, against FC Cincinnati, on April 13.

And this victory was notably signed by Sunusi Ibrahim. The Nigerian striker, who replaced Jules-Anthony Vilsaint who was injured in the 19the minute, scored two of his team’s four goals.

Goals which were mainly scored during a completely crazy first half.

Vilsaint in tears

On Tuesday, Jules-Anthony Vilsaint told the media that he regretted having been selfish on one of CF Montreal’s chances last Saturday by not giving the ball to Choinière in the area.

On Wednesday, he didn’t have to wait long for his chance to make amends. From the 6e minute, Vilsaint passed the ball to Ariel Lassiter to his left, who scored the first goal. Already two yellow cards had been awarded at this time.

Ariel Lassiter

Unfortunately, the Quebec striker’s evening was short-lived. At the 17e, on a Montreal attack, he appeared to suffer a hamstring strain. Vilsaint refused the stretcher, left the field on his own… and in tears. His mother and brother were in the stands.

Jules-Anthony Vilsaint left the field following an injury.

This (other) exit of an injured attacker for the CFM seemed to cool the enthusiasm of everyone in the Saputo stadium. Excluding DC United, who took advantage of this moment of hesitation to make it 1-1 in the 29the, courtesy of the very efficient Christian Benteke. Gabriele Corbo was on the ground during the strange sequence, and Jonathan Sirois misplayed the tall Belgian’s lobbed shot.

We then witnessed one of the great goals of the season for the Bleu-blanc-noir. Ruan, who worked very well in depth on Wednesday evening, submitted a cross towards the DC surface. Sunusi found his angle, and allowed CFM to regain the lead 2-1.

Ruan and Matti Peltola

One of the most decisive players for the locals in this meeting was… Matti Peltola, from the visitors. At the 37e, it’s him who mows down Duke in the center, near the DC Yellow Card box. Lassiter poses in front of the ball… but it is ultimately Mathieu Choinière who takes the excellent low shot, and who scores the net for 3-1.

A few minutes later, the inevitable Benteke reduced the gap to 3-2. So that then, in stoppage time, Peltola inherited a second card, seeing himself expelled from the match.

Are you still following us? We’re only at halftime.

At least the flow of events slowed down in the second half. Montreal played most of the game, despite some honest scares in the box. Because 10 against 11 or not, Christian Benteke is a threat at all times.

In this sense, at 3-2, we had to find a way to consolidate. This is what Ibrahim did in 73egrabbing a ball served by Ruan as he silently prowled the area.

This one will do good for the morale of Laurent Courtois’ troops. Especially with the international break fast approaching.
