(Toronto) Nissan Canada has issued a warning not to drive a batch of 48,000 vehicles in the latest effort to expand its campaign over faulty airbags.
The recall involves cars and SUVs as old as the 2002 model year that were recalled as part of an ongoing campaign targeting defective Takata airbags.
The automaker is asking drivers of the 2002 Infiniti QX4, 2002-2004 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002-2006 Nissan Sentra to stop driving their vehicles and contact Nissan for a free recall repair.
Takata cushions contain a calcium sulfate absorbent propellant which may degrade after prolonged exposure to high humidity and temperatures and cause rupture upon deployment.
In December, Ford issued a similar safety recall for 275,000 vehicles in Canada, warning of the risk of airbag rupture.
In the United States, approximately 6.2 million vehicles equipped with potentially dangerous air bags remain on the roads.
