A study by Santé Publique France reveals that a quarter of French adults smoke daily. It highlights disparities between regions and men and women.
Every day, a quarter of French adults light a cigarette. “There is a lack, in fact. It’s physical”admits one of them. “It’s an addiction”, adds another. Behind this average, stable for several years, Santé Publique France reveals particularities. The heaviest smokers are found in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region (29.5%) and Occitane (28.9%). In Overseas Territories (Guyana, Guadeloupe and Martinique), only one in ten adults consume tobacco every day.
The typical profile of the smoker is that of a man under 60 years old, with low income, with a level of education less than or equal to the baccalaureate. Santé Publique France nevertheless emphasizes that daily smoking decreased between 2016 and 2019. Another positive point, more than half of smokers say they want to quit. The study should enable health authorities to adapt their cessation assistance policy.
