A 62-year-old woman died of cholera in Mamoudzou (Mayotte), Saturday May 25, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced on Sunday. This is the second death linked to this disease in the department, after the death of a 3-year-old girl on Wednesday May 8. The woman died “at his home on the heights of the Cavani district”specified the ARS in a press release.
“In application of the cholera control protocol, the intervention teams went to the site to disinfect the home and take care of those close to the deceased”she adds. “Vaccination operations for contact cases are carried out as of” this Sunday.
The first cases of cholera in the territory were recorded in mid-March in people returning from neighboring Comoros, where the epidemic is flaring. Cholera, a bacterial disease that can cause acute diarrhea and lead to death from dehydration within one to three days, is transmitted through contaminated water or food. There are effective vaccines and treatments.
