(Papineauville) Alcohol and speed could be involved in a swerve which left one dead and four seriously injured Saturday in Papineauville, in Outaouais.
Emergency services were notified around 3:15 a.m. of the swerve, which occurred on Highway 50 at kilometer 207.
“It was a single vehicle with five occupants on board which, according to witnesses, was traveling at high speed. He found himself losing control and hit guardrails before rolling over,” explained Sergeant Stéphane Tremblay, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
“The driver of the vehicle was ejected and he was pronounced dead at the hospital during the night,” he said.
The victim is a man, aged 22, from Longueuil, in Montérégie.
As for his four passengers, they suffered serious injuries, but their lives are not threatened.
“The other occupants of the vehicle are all young people in their early twenties,” underlined the SQ spokesperson.
Highway 50 was closed to traffic in the area, eastbound, for an indefinite period, to allow SQ investigators to analyze the scene.
“We already know that alcohol and speed could have played a role in this collision,” confirmed Sergeant Tremblay.
The SQ investigation is continuing.
