The director of “The Artist” tells the story of a Jewish child who miraculously escapes deportation by being taken in by a family living in a wood.
Last day of competition in Cannes. The jury and its president Greta Gerwig will end their screening marathon with two films, Friday May 24: Wild fig tree seedsby Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof and The most valuable commodity, by Michel Hazanavicius. The first tells the story of an investigating judge at the revolutionary court in Tehran, overcome by paranoia and imposing his law on his family. The director, sentenced just before the opening of the Festival to a prison sentence by the Iranian authorities, will climb the steps a little before 3 p.m.
The second film creates an event, since it is the first animated feature film in competition since Waltz with Bachir, by Ari Folman, in 2008. The genre is a little forgotten when it comes to competing for the Palme d’Or.
In this feature film, screened at 7:30 p.m. on the Croisette, Michel Hazanavicius traces the history ofa Jewish child who miraculously escapes deportation. Taken in by a lumberjack and her husband, this child “will turn the lives of this woman, her husband, and all those who will cross her destiny upside down”announces the synopsis. The day will also be marked by the masterclass by George Lucas, the father of the saga Star Warsbefore he received an honorary Palme d’Or the next day, during the closing ceremony.
