Public audiovisual: what does the reform consist of?
Public audiovisual: what does the reform consist of?
(FRANCE 2)

French MPs were due to examine a public broadcasting merger project this Thursday, May 23. Ultimately, this exam was postponed. The government tends to bring together France Télévisions, Radio France and the INA.

France Télévisions, Radio France, INA and perhaps RFI and France 24: what if, tomorrow, all these companies formed only one, called France Médias? The government wants to do this merger of public broadcasting quickly. The bill was even to be discussed on May 23 in the National Assembly. The exam was finally postponed, the official reason being that the agenda would be too busy.

But there is also a context: this merger project is politically contested by the left. Then contested internally by numerous employees. A strike is currently particularly popular at Radio France. The bill’s timetable provides for the creation of France Médias from January 1 and the effective merger of the companies from 2026. The fate of France 24 and RFI has not yet been decided. Public financing of the audiovisual sector would benefit from new guarantees. 16,000 employees are affected by this reform.
