In front of the coffins gathered at the University of Tehran, the Supreme Leader steps forward before beginning the farewell prayer to the president and the seven other people who died in the helicopter crash. Alongside the Supreme Guide, members of the Shiite clergy and the government, but also leaders from abroad such as the political leader of Hamas and the number 2 of Lebanese Hezbollah. Once the prayer is over, the coffins are taken into the city center, in the middle of a huge crowd. “I’m sad, I feel like I’ve lost one of my loved ones”deplores a woman.

May 22 was declared a public holiday, and residents of Tehran received messages on their phones, asking them to go to the funeral. A national tribute to the president which, however, is not unanimous in the country, even if it is difficult to hear discordant voices.
