With more than 1.2 million units sold, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in the world in 2023. This feat, reinforced by the fact that it is a fully electric vehicle, is obviously attracting attention from the industry. Volvo now wants to tackle this with a new model, the EX60.
In a magazine interview Auto Express, the director of the manufacturer’s new vehicle program, Erik Severinson, specifies that this newcomer will be built on the EX90 platform which has been entering the Canadian market for several months. As its name suggests, it will be slotted between the EX30 and the EX90 in the organizational chart of the Swedish brand.
On a technical level, this electric SUV will integrate the battery as a structural element of the vehicle to increase the rigidity of the chassis and “increase energy density”, specifies Severinson during the interview. A capacity of 100 kWh is envisaged to ensure acceptable autonomy.
Volvo will also take inspiration from Tesla in the assembly of this EX60 by using “megamolding” for the rear subfloor of the vehicle. This increases the production rate in addition to reducing costs as well as the weight of the part by approximately 15 to 20%, says Severinson. On the other hand, if the vehicle is involved in an accident, repairing it is much more complex to carry out. The EX60 is expected to begin production in 2025.
