Writer Caroline Dawson has died from cancer, her family announced on Instagram.
The author of Where I hide “left quietly last night with her lover,” we can read in the publication. Caroline Dawson suffered from bone cancer for several years.
She was 45 years old.
“She leaves to mourn her devoted parents Natalia and Alfredo, her adored brothers Nicholas and Jim, her beautiful lover Jacob, her magnificent and bright children Paul and Bérénice, as well as many friends all over the world, without count all the people who admire him and who read his books,” we can read in the publication.
Caroline Dawson was born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1979, during the Pinochet regime. With her parents and two brothers, the little girl arrived in Quebec in 1986.
Holder of a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Montreal, she taught this subject at CEGEP Édouard-Montpetit.
His first novel entitled Where I hide won several awards after its publication in 2020, including the Literary Prize for College Students. The autofiction story tells the refugee journey of a 7-year-old girl who immigrates to Quebec with her family.
His collection of poetry What are youpublished in 2023, and his children’s book Going from far away, published in 2024, also deal with immigration and uprooting.
The Caroline Dawson Prize, the creation of which was announced by Radio-Canada in May 2024, rewards writers with immigrant backgrounds.
