While Mohamed Amra and his four accomplices are still on the run, the question of cell phones in prison arises. Last year, in 2023, 53,000 phones and accessories were seized.
To escape, helped by a commando of professionals, it is possible that Mohamed Amra was able to use a cell phone, normally prohibited in prison. The day before his escape, which occurred on Tuesday May 14, a cell phone was found in his cell, in Évreux (Eure). Around ten others have since been seized in Les Baumettes, in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), during searches of Mohamed Amra’s acquaintances. They are currently being analyzed.
The mobile phone is an everyday object in French prisons. A month ago, after searches in the cells of drug traffickers, the Minister of Justice, Éric Dupont-Moretti, took stock of this: “The results are significant: 63 mobile phones seized, 24 USB keys, 16 SIM cards.” In total, 53,000 mobile phones were seized in prison in 2023. They are introduced by drones or through visiting rooms. They can then be used for trafficking.
