(Louisville) Xander Schauffele broke the record for the best card at the PGA Championship on Thursday, completing the first round at 62 (under-9).
Schauffele also tied the record for a major tournament, having achieved it for the first time last year at the United States Open.
Branden Grace was the first golfer to score a 62 at a major tournament. It was at the British Open in 2017.
Schauffele, who finished second at the Wells Fargo Championship last week, completed his opening nine in 31 strokes, then had a streak of three birdies in four holes on the second.
His ninth and final birdie came at the seventh flag thanks to two putts.
As of this writing, Tony Finau is second at 6 under with four holes to play. Rory McIlroy made three birdies in a row and was four shots behind the leader with two holes to complete.
The sun was out to welcome players to Valhalla, where the start of activities was delayed by 10 minutes due to fog. The weather forecast, however, shows a 90% chance of rain on Friday.
