(Ottawa) Ottawa has not yet set a date for the North American Leaders’ Summit, raising the possibility that it will not take place in this important election year in Mexico and the United States.
The annual summit of North American leaders is hosted alternately by Canada, the United States and Mexico. It allows for a series of bilateral and trilateral meetings on transnational issues such as immigration and drug trafficking.
Canada agreed last year to host the next summit and Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena even declared in February that it would take place in Quebec in April.
But Global Affairs Canada did not specify whether the summit would take place this year, or where it might be held.
Mexicans will go to the polls on June 2 for presidential and legislative elections, while the US elections will take place on November 5.
Bruce Heyman, U.S. ambassador to Canada during the Barack Obama administration, says that under the circumstances, such a summit is unlikely to take place this year. The most important thing, he said, is that the summit takes place one day.
