The Ontario government wants to suspend the driver’s licenses of car thieves for at least ten years.
Transport Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria added Tuesday that repeat offenders, found guilty of car theft a third time, would even see their driver’s license suspended for life in Ontario.
Minister Sarkaria announced that his government will also put in place tougher penalties for certain violations of the road safety code.
The Ontario government is particularly seeking a one-year license suspension for people found guilty of dangerous, “stunt”-type maneuvers. These penalties would also increase in the event of a repeat offense.
Minister Sarkaria recalls that a vehicle is stolen every 14 minutes in Ontario.
Vehicle thefts in this province have increased dramatically in recent years.
