Examination of the end-of-life bill began on Monday May 13 in the National Assembly. The special committee will study the approximately 1,900 amendments tabled all week.

The parliamentary marathon around assisted dying finally begins on Monday May 13. Some 1,900 amendments were tabled for this first round in a special committee at the National Assembly, ahead of the examination of the reform in the hemicycle, scheduled in two weeks. The subject is so sensitive that the first debate is over the choice of words. The government text uses the expression “assisted dying”, while some MPs would prefer to use the words “euthanasia” or even “assisted suicide”.

A bill that promises intense debates

To access this assistance in dying, several conditions are set out in the government text. The patient must be over 18 years old and suffer from a serious and incurable illness, and his vital prognosis must also be in the short or medium term. Another thorny question: what to do when the patient no longer has the necessary discernment to request assistance in dying? In this context, deputies from the left and the presidential camp wish to give the possibility of formalizing this wish in advance directives. Medical liability also comes into play. The bill promises intense debates in the Assembly.
