The separatists are no longer at the head of Catalonia, in Spain. Sunday May 12, the socialist candidate Salvador Illa emerged victorious from the vote. But his majority is relative and alliances will be necessary.

The bet is therefore won for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who came to support the candidate during his last meeting. By winning this region, he wanted to prove that the policy of détente he has pursued in Catalonia since coming to power in 2018 had borne fruit.
No absolute majority, alliances to be found
“Who wants progress, who wants coexistence and who wants stability?“, he pretended to question during the meeting. The absolute majority, set at 68 seats, is however far from being achieved, with 42 elected officials obtained. The socialists will therefore have to form alliances to establish themselves in power In any case, they should not form an alliance with the right-wing separatists of Carles Puigdemont, who initiated the attempted secession of Catalonia in 2017, and has since been in exile, still being pursued by the Spanish justice system.
