The issue of birth leave will be on the table for negotiations between social partners. It will replace parental leave and could be better paid but shorter.

How can we encourage the presence of the father and mother with their child during his or her first year? The government wants to create birth leave. In addition to maternity or paternity leave, men and women will be able to stay at home for three months. They will receive half of their salary, with a maximum of 1,900 euros per month. Many parents are enthusiastic about this new device announced for 2025. “It will allow more people to enjoy their baby”, notes a woman. Other parents, on the contrary, are worried about seeing this birth leave replace the current parental leave, which lasts longer. “We are losing a lot of money with the current holiday”deplores a mother.

Shortened holidays

Family associations are concerned about this shortened leave. “Mothers who stayed with their child for a year, if they only have three months left, there are 9 months where they will have to find childcare. But we know that 200,000 places are missing,” notes Patrick Chrétien, vice-president of Familles de France. The government will launch a consultation with associations and social partners on Wednesday May 15.
