A good fifteen years after launching her career, the singer-songwriter from São Paolo Céu clearly needed a change of scenery. Chasing out the bossa, pop and electronic influences that defined his vision of popular Brazilian music. Heading for California, where his faithful collaborator and director Pupillo found the skillful composer and arranger Adrian Younge, with whom soul goes well with jazz and psychedelic pop. Flashback in the 1970s in eleven new songs, all very pleasant to the ear, but quickly forgotten, the whole giving off an air of something heard elsewhere and better. It is when the crew rows against the tide of soul that they find a hint of originality: in the cadence of the sweet Cremosain the distant bossa-tropicalia reminder of Gerando na Altain the subtle groove rocksteady-early reggae of delicious High na Cachu, so many bursts piercing the American soul atmosphere sought by Céu. Please note, Céu’s concert, scheduled for May 17 at the National, is postponed due to illness.
