Is this a turning point, a reversal in the United States’ hitherto unconditional support for Israel? The American president threatened to stop delivering weapons in the event of a massive offensive against Rafah.
It is a warning, or rather a threat from Joe Biden to Benjamin Netanyahu. On CNN, the American president drew a red line regarding the delivery of weapons from the United States: “If they go to Rafah, (…) then I will not deliver to them the weapons that we have always provided them”. Joe Biden recognizes that 200 and 900 kg bombs have already killed civilians in Gaza. Last week, the White House suspended one of its deliveries until further notice.
Benjamin Netanyahu sticks to his positions
In Israel, Joe Biden’s words are seen as a betrayal. Thursday May 9, Benjamin Netanyahu published an extract from his speech: “I say to heads of state around the world: no decision of any kind will prevent Israel from defending itself.” On the ground, Israeli forces continue to bombard Rafah. Tanks and infantrymen are on the edge of the city but not yet in the most populated areas. The Americans have been opposing the Israeli offensive for weeks but have never yet put their money where their mouth is. Joe Biden’s statement is, certainly, a turning point, but not yet a breaking point.
